Kugel Mesh Patch

The Kugel Mesh Patch, also called the Bard Hernia Patch, is a medical device used to repair hernias. The patches are inserted through a small incision for placement behind the hernia site. While the patches are small at the time of insertion, they contain a “memory recoil ring” that allows the patch to expand once placed behind the hernia site. The patches were first approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2001. In 2005 the manufacturer issued an initial recall which was expanded in 2007. The recalls were issued after it was discovered that the “memory recall coils” can malfunction leading to perforated bowels and other complications.
