Fleet Phospho-soda Prep

Fleet Phospho-soda is an over-the-counter oral sodium phosphate solution typically used for the occassional treatment of constipation. During the 1990s the manufacturer, C.B. Fleet Co., began marketing increased dosages of the drug for use as a bowel cleanser prior to medical procedures such as colonoscopies. However, the FDA never approved the drug at such increased dosages.

High doses of the drug have been found to cause kidney damage – possibly severe enough to require dialysis or kidney transplants. In some cases, the kidney damage was severe enough to lead to death. Accordingly, in December 2008, the FDA ordered a recall of the Fleet products used as a medical procedure preparation.
