According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, 698 bicyclists were killed in motor vehicle accidents and another 44,000 were injured in 2007. A very high number of those killed were under the age of 16. Head injuries accounted for the majority of the serious injuries received in bicycle accidents.

Bike Accident

The most common causes of bicycle accidents are the negligence of another driver, defective safety equipment and hazardous road conditions. Bicyclists are particularly at risk in an accident because 1) body parts are exposed and can be directly struck by the other driver’s vehicle or other objects, and 2) the weight of the other vehicle is much greater than the weight of the bicycle.

Therefore, bicycle accidents can result in catastrophic injuries such as head injuries, spinal cord injuries, back injuries, broken bones, and amputations to name a few.
